Lifestyle Newborn ~ Alexandria, VA.

About 5 years ago, Lifestyle Newborn sessions were my least favorite sessions. They terrified me. At the time I had very limited experience with babies and technically speaking, from a photography standpoint, they could be kind of a nightmare. Every session is completely different and you never know what you are going to walk into. Is the house facing North in the dead of winter? Good luck finding natural light there. Is the house decluttered enough? Good luck getting those "frame worthy" portraits.

Fast forward to current day and they are seriously one of my favorite sessions to shoot. Having my own child definitely helped me get more comfortable with babies, but also learning to go with the flow has changed everything. Im not always going to walk into the perfect house with that perfect light. Hell, my house looks like a bomb went off in it most of the time. So how can I expect anything less of my clients? There is also the issue of mom not being up for it. I sure as shit wasn't up for mine. But looking back, Im so glad I have the photos to look back on. And as long as you go into the session knowing that they probably aren't feeling their best, you can accommodate that. Remember, their body just went through an insane battle.

I've also gotten better at communicating with my clients. No, you don't need to hire a maid before your session, but you can just shove your stuff into a closet and call it a day. Voila! Magazine ready home! Another thing I'm less afraid of is moving things. Guess what: no lifestyle session goes without some furniture or something being moved. Its just the nature of the beast. And I've found that literally every client has been cool with it. But don't be a jerk, put it back when you're done.

I've been wanting to get back into blogging about my sessions because I think it is important to let people peek inside and see what it's like. And what better way than with this gorgeous session I had with a brand new family of 3. The tones in these images are everything!
